Teeth Whitening

At North Court Family Dentistry, we want to help you make your smile its brightest. In order to do that, we must first evaluate your teeth to be sure you are a candidate for whitening. Also, the best results are achieved after a thorough cleaning to remove any tartar or plaque that will interfere with the whitening system. There are three types of stains that the teeth can acquire:
  1. Extrinsic Stain: The best candidates are those with Extrinsic Stains. This is the staining of the outer layer of the tooth. This type comes from coffee, tea, wine, cola, red sauces, and all other foods that can stain the teeth. Tobacco also can be a major cause of extrinsic stain. Sometimes this can be removed with a whitening toothpaste. If not, we can try one of our whitening options to get your teeth their brightest.
  2. Age-related staining; This type of staining comes as the enamel on the teeth begins to thin and the underlying structure of the tooth, Dentin, darkens. Those with this type of staining will require treatments that can penetrate the dentin. It is more difficult to achieve a higher level of whitening with this type of staining. Sometimes, it is necessary to perform bonding or crowns to camouflage these areas.
  3. Intrinsic Stain: This is the most difficult stain to treat. These stains originate from inside your teeth. They can be caused by trauma to the tooth or exposure tetracycline when you were a child. Sometimes in office or take-home whitenings can improve the overall appearance. Often though, this type of staining has to be camouflaged with bonding or crowns.

Once you have become a patient of record in our office, we will do an evaluation for whitening and determine if you are a candidate. We utilize a variety of whitening systems in our office:

Opalescence Go®
This system is the simplest and most convenient. You can begin whitening the same day. The Go trays are pre-filled with whitening gel. It is the professional alternative to less-effective over-the-counter options.

Opalescence® PF-10% or 20% with Custom aligners
This system is wonderful for a more customized whitening experience. We will take impressions to make custom aligners that will fit your teeth. On a second visit, we will show you how to use the aligners with the whitening gel. Containing Potassium Nitrate and Fluoride, the gel is formulated to increase comfort and improve the overall health of the teeth.

In-Office Whitening
This is a quick and effective way to achieve a brighter, whiter smile. Using a high percentage whitening gel, we can effectively whiten your teeth by several shades in less than an hour.
